In 1939 when Steve Hale, Jr. was a student at Georgia Tech, he visited Vero Beach, Florida during a Spring break. While exploring this beautiful little town for the first time, he met an elderly man who opened up a whole new world for him. Proudly showing Steve around his small packinghouse, this gentleman gave Steve a sample of his fresh, just picked, tree-ripened fruit. Steve had never tasted oranges and grapefruit so sweet and juicy. Before leaving to go back to school, Steve learned that Vero Beach was located in the very heart of the Indian River citrus belt, even then known for growing the best tasting Florida oranges and grapefruit.
Inspired by this visit, Steve decided to establish a similar business.

Set above the bluffs of Fish Creek, Wisconsin, Lautenbach’s Orchard Country consists of a country market offering hundreds of locally grown products, a winery and cider mill (located in the 100 year-old restored red dairy barn) along with an apple grading shed, and picnic areas—all nestled among 100 acres of fruit-bearing trees and vines.
Purchased in 1955 by Bill and Ruth Lautenbach, the family started re-planting Montmorency cherry trees on the property in the 1960s, when Door County became known as "Cherryland USA." For years, fresh fruit was sold by the roadside to passing tourists from an old wagon, using a cigar box, as a cash register.
In the early 80's Bob decided it was time to diversify his products using the Montmorency cherries, grown on the property. Work began soon after on the old dairy barn to refurbish it into a wine production area and tasting room. Orchard Country Winery was established in 1985 and opened its doors to visitors in the Spring, with its first cherry wine.

Sun Harvest Citrus has a long-standing tradition of bringing you the very best Florida-grown citrus – a tradition that spans three generations of the Edsall family.
It began in 1940 when Robert Edsall, Sr. planted his first citrus grove in Vero Beach. He chose this Indian River location because he knew the soil, water and climate conditions were perfect for growing the most delicious citrus in the world. This legacy was handed down to Robert’s son, Bobby, and continues today through the leadership of Robert’s grandson, David McKenzie.
The Sun Harvest Citrus retail store and packinghouse opened in 1990 when Sandy McKenzie Nicely, Robert’s granddaughter, decided to offer Edsall Groves’ delicious Indian River citrus to the public. She and her husband Dave are joined by Sandy’s cousin, Drew Edsall (Robert’s grandson) in offering the family’s delicious Indian River citrus, fresh-squeezed juices, gourmet foods, candies, gifts and more at their store in Fort Myers.
